Friday Is National Donut Day, Plan Accordingly

It's a donut celebration.

I make a lot of jokes about National [Food] Day, and perhaps that’s rude of me. Maybe I should be a little more sympathetic to the hustles of food councils across the country doing the hard work of convincing people to get excited about cherry tarts (June 17) and tapioca (June 28). It’s just that these “holidays” just seem like an excuse to send out press releases, and rarely feel particularly well thought out; does anyone really need a particular day—June 13 to be exact—to celebrate the cupcake?
At least National Donut Day’s heart seems like it is in the right place. This year the holiday turns 80, which I assume makes it at least a few years older than National Vanilla Milkshake Day. What originally began as a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army has spread across the country, including our neck of the woods. Even if you don’t care about the charity aspects of the day, I advise you to read up on the history of the Donut Girls at least.
So, if you want to make your Friday just a little bit better, here is how you can celebrate National Donut Day:
Bosscat Kitchen & Libations
They’ll have their donut burger on the menu all day. “What is the donut burger?” you ask. It’s two 4-oz. Midwest beef patties, American cheese, bacon and duck fat fried egg on a chocolate-covered donut. You’ll also be able to get it at BCK Kitchen & Cocktail Adventures.
Duck Donuts
According to Facebook, you can get a free donut on Friday and pick up a coupon for a future donut deal.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Get a free classic donut—options include Boston Kreme, glazed, jelly, and chocolate frosted—with the purchase of any beverage, while supplies last.
Krispy Kreme
Participating Krispy Kremes—there’s a handy list on their website—will be offering up each customer one free donut, no purchase necessary.
Shipley Do-Nuts
Get a free glazed donut with a purchase from 5 a.m.—12 p.m. A portion of the day’s sales will be donated to the Salvation Army of Greater Houston.
Weights + Measures
W+M is getting in on the action with buy one, get one free donuts.
