June 1 marks the start of National Candy Month, National Dairy Month, National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, National Iced Tea Month, National Papaya Month, and the start of the 2018 hurricane season. It also means we are now 20 days away from the official start of summer. It's cool that fresh fruits and veggies have their own month, but what about those fruits and veggies that are just on the edge of going bad? Where is their love? Anyways, here's what you need to know about Houston food news this week, before or after you enjoy a donut today:

  • Sad news to start off with: New Orleans’ restaurateur, James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and Bananas Foster inventor Ella Brennan passed away this week. Last night the sign at Brennan's of Houston went dark in as they mourned the death of their matriarch.
  • La Vista 101 is open for business in the Lazybrook/Timbergrove area. Houston restaurateur Greg Gordon has opened up the new place at 1805 West 18th St. with J.D. Woodward as executive chef. In a press release, Woodward said, “diners will taste influences from Italy, Greece, North Africa and Spain.” The 101 references their plan to offer up the basics—think school class numbering—of comforting Italian food.
  • Southern Smoke is a few months away, but we don’t blame you getting excited now. Scheduled for September 30, the 2018 installment of Chris Shepherd’s major food fundraising event will include visiting chefs Aaron Franklin (Franklin Barbecue, Austin), Edouardo Jordan (JuneBaby and Salere, Seattle), Daniela Soto-Innes (Cosme and Atla, New York City) and more. We’ll have a lot more to say about this as we get closer to the event. Tickets go on sale July 10 at noon.
  • The team behind Spicy Dog food truck is going brick-and-mortar. You’ll be able to find their new spot, Spicy Bear, at 2723 Yale St., where they’ll be serving up milk teas, breakfast sandwiches, and Japanese-inspired hot dogs. (H/T Eater Houston
  • Saint Arnold celebrates another trip around the sun with their 24th anniversary party on June 9. As part of the celebration of so many years of brewing independence, they’re hosting two stages of independent Texas music acts, including Trae The Truth and Los Skarnales. You can get a $10 general admission ticket or a $35 Saint Package which includes admission, two beers, and a special commemorative 24th anniversary glass.
  • News from the folks over at Cherry Pie Hospitality: you can now get Nonna Mary's Gelato at Central Markets across Texas. Master Gelatier Josh Collier is behind the flavors you’ll find, including strawberry basil sorbetto, vegan chocolate sorbetto, Texas pecan gelato, Sicilian pistachio, super fudge brownie and cherry cheesecake.
  • Fielding’s local kitchen + bar is helping you kick off the summer with a complimentary wine tasting on June 6 from 5-7 p.m., no reservations required. On the menu you’ll find Chateau Minuty Rose Cote de Provence, Chateau Minuty Rose OR, Chateau Minuty Rose 281, Matua Rose 5.00, and Sterling Sparkling Rose.
