Updated 4:30 p.m. Sept 25

Harris County Voter Registrar Ann Harris Bennett has implemented several measures to make registering to vote easier. You can now text #RegisterHarris to 832-957-1957 to register. To be clear, just texting this number won't actually register you, but the number will direct you to the Harris County Tax Office's online portal where you can fill out your registration form. After that, print out your form, sign it, and mail it back to the office—just make sure the postmark is October 5 or earlier.

“Allowing access to voter registration resources via mobile phones provides a larger number of eligible voters another opportunity to register to vote,” Bennett said in a release. “Registered voters who have moved, or who have changed their names, may also update their voter registration record by using the texting feature.”

Additionally, voters can check their registration status here.

Updated 6 p.m. Sept 21

Because of Tropical Storm Beta and potential flooding, some of the following events have been postponed, including the Saint Arnold registration drive, which has been moved to Friday, September 25. Please double-check before you leave your home if the location is still open, and if you see high water, turn around.

Have you registered to vote yet? Election day is only six weeks away (heck, it could take longer to get your Covid results back). Worryingly, voter registration was down 24 percent in the first seven months of this year as compared to 2016, according to a report from the Texas Tribune. The worst month was April, according to the report, when only 34,694 people registered to vote, as compared to 143,199 in 2016.

You want to make sure your voice is heard this year—it’s not just the president you’re voting for this November. There are hundreds of smaller, local elections in the Greater Houston area that will impact your life on a daily basis. Here’s a taste of what positions folks in the Greater Houston area can vote for:

  • U.S. Senator John Cornyn is up for re-election.
  • Seven U.S. House Representatives, including Al Green, Sheila Jackson Lee, Dan Crenshaw, and Sylvia Garcia
  • Railroad commissioner
  • Texas Supreme Court—Chief Justice and 3 other justices
  • Three Criminal Court of Appeals judges
  • One State Board of Education member, District 6 (a position that wields tremendous influence over what is—and is not—taught in Texas public schools.)
  • Five state senators
  • 34 state representatives
  • Court of Appeals—2 chief justices and 3 justices
  • 33 district judges
  • Two district attorneys, one in Harris and one in Montgomery County.
  • 105 county-level positions across Harris, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties, including a sheriff's race in each county.

When are the deadlines again?

  • Monday, October 5: This is the deadline to register both in person and by mail (postmark should be by this date).
  • Tuesday, October 13: Early-bird voting begins.
  • Friday, October 23: This is the deadline to request a mail-in ballot. The county election office must receive your ballot by this date.
  • Wednesday, October 30: Last day of early-bird voting.
  • Tuesday, November 3: Election Day.
