Jump Start Your Resolution with Weight Loss Gym Challenges

Worst case scenario: They hold you accountable. Best case scenario: You win lots of money.

It’s that time of year when yet again, New Year’s resolutions become a hot topic. How many times have we heard a sentence like, “After the holidays, I’m going to start...” at a holiday party? We tend to think that a new year means finally getting serious about our goals, which for many of us means resolving to lose weight and get in shape.

When left to our own devices we usually have a strong start and then at some point slip back into our old habits. This year instead of repeating the past and trying on your own once again, a group weight loss challenge may be a better option. Several gyms and studios across Houston have launched weight loss programs that are measurable and attainable, and best of all hold you accountable.

6 Weeks To A Lean-er Machine at Orangetheory

Orangetheory provides a weight loss challenge that begins mid-January at each of their seven locations in the Houston area, including Vintage Park, which opens this month. Registration is $25 and includes a pre-challenge weigh-in, three weekly weigh-ins and a final weigh-in at the end of six weeks.

Orangetheory highly encourages taking before, during and after pictures in the same clothes so you can see the changes in your body over time. Prizes will go to the two participants who lose the most percentage body weight, with the first place winner overall from each studio getting $750. Each studio hosting the weight loss challenge will begin on different dates, so check with the location closest to you for details. 

Three Week Weight Loss Blitz at F3 Cross Training

F3 Cross Training is a functional training gym with locations in the Heights and East Downtown. If you are not currently a member, you can sign up for a 30-day trial month for $30. F3 Cross Training will host a 21-day weight loss challenge from Jan. 11 through Jan. 31, beginning with a nutrition seminar led by a registered dietician on Jan. 9 at the East Downtown location to get your nutrition in check.

Register online or attend a group fitness class this week, where you'll be weighed to get a baseline BMI and body fat percentage. Weigh-ins will also take place at the end of the challenge. The participant with the highest percentage of total weight lost will win a month of free classes.

40 Days to Slim Down at The Houstonian Club

For members only, the Houstonian Club will be hosting a 40-day weight loss challenge from Jan. 21 to Feb. 29. There is a $35 registration fee with prizes given to the members with the highest percentage body fat lost. The first place winner will receive a six-month complimentary membership, the second place winner will receive a $700 Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa gift card and the third place winner will receive a $300 cash credit toward their membership.

If your studio or gym does not have a specific weight loss challenge, ask them how they can be a resource for your fitness and wellness goals in the new year. There’s no reason to have them alone! We could all use some help and accountability to not only get started but to continue healthy behaviors so they become a habit that will last all year. Keep it up, and come next holiday season you'll be saying “I will continue to work on my health and wellness goals,” with no hesitation.
