Try as he might, Harvey hasn’t stopped Houston from having endless events to discover this fall. At Discovery Green alone, Houstonians can find something to do just about every night of the week from now through November—whether it be movies or music on the lawn with the kids and the canine, or parkour beside local art installations.
And while, no, the roller rink is not back yet, these events are all 100 percent free.
For the Family
Houston moms and dads can take a break from homework and carpool lines and opt for free movies under the Houston skyline on Friday and Saturday nights this fall, starting with Hidden Figures this Friday at 8 p.m. and wrapping up with Zootopia on Saturday, Nov. 4. All movies, except Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, are rated PG and start showing between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Guests who arrive early can also take their shot at kid-friendly contests and activities.
Families looking to keep the brain juices flowing, and/or have earlier bedtimes, can also take part in educational workshops offered in the park. Some stand outs include STEM Saturdays led by Girlstart, Toddler Tuesdays from the Houston Public Library and Take Me Outdoors Houston presented by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Those who reserve Sundays for quality family time can also picnic in the park to the tune of live music from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Sunday from now until October 29.
For Your Health
Why join some of Houston’s newest fitness studios, when Discovery Green offers free classes six days a week? Okay, there are probably plenty of reasons, one potentially being that you are not yet adept in your circus arts skills. Regardless, here are the free fitness programs offered from now until the first week of November at Discovery Green: Yoga from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays followed by an hour of optional meditation, circus arts classes Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., core-focused yoga Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Zumba on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (except Oct. 11), parkour Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., yoga Saturday mornings from 9 to 10.
For a Night On the Town
Where else can you see Paul Wall for free in his hometown? Though most of the semi-weekly concerts won’t have headliners as recognizable as "The People's Champ," Discovery Green will be reintroducing its Thursday night concert series this fall as well as Party on the Plaza concerts showcasing regional artists in front of the new and improved Avenida Houston. Other artists include The Peterson Brothers, Charley Crockett, Ty Herndon and Canned Acoustica.
Also on the Avenida, Houstonians can catch the tail-end of the suspended streamer art exhibit, Arcade, until Nov. 15 and snap the perfect Instagram. Meanwhile, on the Wharf at Avendia Houston, visitors can view Cirque de Soleil-like performances every Friday until Nov. 3. And on Oct. 7, fans of METDance can dive into the new season during a two-hour outdoor production with a special appearance by the MET too Youth Company that’ll be sure to keep the audiences on its toes.
