Jimmy Buffet called them boat drinks. Most of us just say tiki. Whatever your preferred nomenclature, these rum-based wonders are best served up on a long, hot summer day, even if you are 52.2 miles from the nearest beach.

Coco Loco at High & Dry Rum Bar

If you like piña coladas, make like Rupert Holmes and escape to this chic new downtown rum bar, where the traditional drink gets a creamier reinterpretation thanks to craft banana rum and a rich helping of house-made pistachio orgeat syrup. There’s no blender involved, and, since most of the tiki drinks here are on tap, no long wait, either.

Drinks at this Second Ward destination are “Houston Made, Nola Strength,” and that includes this take on the classic cocktail, made with passion fruit and light and dark rums, served over crushed ice. It will transport you straight to the French Quarter,  especially when paired with a fried shrimp po’ boy.

Navy Grog at Lei Low

Want to drink like Sinatra? Order this cocktail, his go-to at Don the Beachcomber in Palm Springs, made with “navy-strength” (57 percent ABV) rum, grapefruit, guava, lime, honey, and nutmeg. The original beverage famously featured a cone of shaved ice erupting from the top like an iceberg, re-created at this Heights destination with a stick of rock candy poking through the drink’s shaved ice.
