Every 38 seconds, someone dies of cardiovascular disease, the leading global cause of death with more than 17.9 million each year. In 2030, that number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million.

That shouldn't be the case, as healthy diet and lifestyle changes can improve heart health and lower a your risk by up to 80 percent, according to the American Heart Association. In conjunction with American Heart Month, a federally designated event for the month of February, this weekend brings a new chance to jumpstart those lifestyle choices for people in the Cypress area.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, the Boardwalk at Towne Lake will host a free heart health pop-up workout class, including a 20-minute sample workout from Orangetheory Fitness and Pure Barre. The pop-up allows visitors to try different fitness classes available at the Boardwalk, and Club Pilates will be on-hand to offer information about their studio there.

Strengthening heart health can be as simple as walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, so just imagine what an Orangetheory class—60 minutes of high intensity exercise meant to spike heart rate, metabolism, and energy—will do for your ticker. Including its Towne Lake location, the popular fitness chain has 10 studios around Houston.

Pure Barre, also on the Boardwalk, uses elements of ballet—most notably, the barre for which it's named—to sculpt long and lean bodies and burn fat with repeated small, isometric movements. The national chain has four other studios around Houston and one in Katy, Spring, and The Woodlands.

The pop-up, emceed by the American Heart Association, will take place on the Boardwalk's green space at 9945 Barker Cypress Road.
