Between gyms closing and wearing masks while working out, maintaining some level of fitness was rough throughout the pandemic. But now, as nearly 50 percent of Houstonians are fully vaccinated, it’s time to get back out there and reclaim your fitness regime.
Luckily, opportunities are plentiful in Houston to achieve your fitness goals—and many of them are free. We rounded up a few spots where you can get your sweat on for no cost at all.
Buffalo Bayou Park: Fridays, 6:30–7:15 a.m
Early bird gets the worm: Show up with a yoga mat and water bottle to Buffalo Bayou Park for yoga as the sun rises on Friday mornings. A great way to calm the body and the mind, this yoga class serves to benefit your mental and physical health. With a great view of the Houston skyline at The Water Works, attendees should feel energized and ready to attack the day. While the class is free, a $10 donation to the Buffalo Bayou Partnership is suggested.
Levy Park: Wednesdays, 6–7 p.m.
Want to work out your whole body? Well, this class is the one for you. Combining yoga, pilates, core strengthening, and ballet, barre is designed to strengthen your muscles, and to sculpt, slim, and tone your body. This low-impact class uses body weight exercises to get you into pre-pandemic shape.
Evelyn’s Park: Mondays, 9–10 a.m.
Looking for a fun way to get your heart rate up? Try zumba. Evelyn’s Park dubs this a “workout in disguise,” mixing low- and high-intensity exercises. This class uses a mix of cardio, muscle conditioning, balance, and flexibility to keep attendees energized and engaged.
Discovery Green: Wednesdays, 6:30–7:30 p.m.
A surefire way to break a sweat, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) classes utilize periods of high intensity exercise and then short periods of rest. Head over to Discovery Green on Wednesday evenings where you will take on a full-body workout that will build strength and endurance. Note: These classes end June 30.
Levy Park: Saturdays, 10 a.m
Try something new and exercise at the same time. This bhangra (a type of Indian folk dancing) class will expose you to Bollywood-style dancing while also making sure you have tons of fun. It's suitable for all age and skill levels, and you are sure to be exhausted by the end.
Discovery Green: Saturdays, 10:15–11:15 a.m.
A traditional Chinese practice that uses meditative techniques to integrate the mind and the body and harness energy, tai chi is a great way to reduce stress and increase balance and flexibility. A more gentle workout, attendees are sure to leave feeling refreshed and energized. Note: these classes end June 26.
