A Binge-Watching Menu to Get You Through the Winter

These dinner-and-a-movie pairings don't even require that you put on pants.

By Banzai Aphrodite December 29, 2016

Dear Houston, Sorry about this crap winter you're having. No frosty windowpanes, no need for fuzzy sweaters, nothing to inspire hot beverages in earthenware mugs.

Don't let it get you down.

A winter without ice storms is a winter without breaks in your internet service! You’ve survived the chaos of November and overstimulation of December. Reward yourself with a solid stretch of curated dining and entertainment. Quash your troubles with a consuming narrative. Don’t even bother putting on pants. We are living in civilized times and our nation’s finest victuals are delivered to our door by order of a smartphone apps. Microwave popcorn and pizza? Please. You’re better than that.

Here are some choice streaming and dining pairings that should keep you emotionally and gastronomically satiated for hours.

Z la18ec

The beginning of everything, including your bingeing.

Recommendation: Z: The Beginning of Everything

A docudrama series set in the roaring twenties with Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald as the heroine. We as the audience glean vicarious glamour and go just a little bit cuckoo with our bacchanalian lifestyle. The accompanying meal should be smoky, boozy, decadent, and have a southern drawl the teensiest bit more convincing than Christina Ricci’s.

  • Release Date: January 27, 2017
  • Streaming on: Amazon
  • Beverage: A French 75 (gin and Champagne) feels like the perfect flapper cocktail.
  • Meal: Ritual’s salt and vinegar pork rinds with bourbon mayo. Follow it with a warm chocolate croissant bread pudding covered in Texas bourbon caramel sauce from Red Dessert Dive.
  • Delivery Service: Ritual is currently putting delivery networks into play and should be up and running by late January. At present you can order carry-out. On the other hand, Red Dessert Dive is already deliverable through UberEats.
Doughmaker iym5iy

Fried chicken and doughnuts: a remedy for our shaky modern world.

Recommendation: The X-Files

Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, the Smoking Man, the Lone Gunmen, the monsters, the secret ops organizations and the all rest offer a respite of '90s nostalgia and camp—an excellent remedy for our shaky modern world. With season 11 expected sometime in 2017, now is a good opportunity for a time warp. We're dealing with unexplained phenomena here, which means lonely roadside cafes at strange hours. Fried chicken and doughnuts fit the bill, and Doughmaker Doughnuts has married the two making a sort of art out of highway food.

  • Release Date: The truth is out there, but the release date of season 11 is still unknown.
  • Streaming on: Nine seasons of The X-Files are available on Netflix. The 10th season is available on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as streaming on Amazon Prime, iTunes, Microsoft, Hulu and Vudu.
  • Meal: Honey butter fried chicken doughnut from food truck Doughmaker Doughnuts
  • Beverage: A smooth Shiner Bock, as ordered in season 7, episode 21, alternating with black coffee (with over 150 hours of episodes, you might need some help to stay awake)
  • Delivery Service: Only available on Saturdays 9am-3pm via UberEats
El real hdxtkj

Something you could imagine eating in a rusty clunker of a car.

Recommendation: Better Call Saul

The prequel spin-off series to AMC's Breaking Bad shows how Jimmy McGill, good hearted shyster, evolves into Saul Goodman, the criminal lawyer made notorious in Breaking Bad. Watching Jimmy try to succeed as a lawyer is a bit like watching the Coyote try to catch the Roadrunner. We don’t want to be him, but we feel for the guy. The menu should feel like something you could imagine eating in a rusty clunker of a car. Something that reflects our hero, a down-and-out flim-flam man from Chicago stuck in Albuquerque: just the right blend of grease and spice.

  • Release Date: Season three will be released early 2017 on AMC.
  • Streaming on: Seasons one and two are available on Netflix.
  • Beverage: A Rusty Nail cocktail, which is what Saul mixes himself on several occasions
  • Meal: Green chile cheeseburger from El Real
  • Delivery Service: UberEats
Green seed neiijz

Emulate a neo-agrarian society with Green Seed Vegan.

Recommendation: The Walking Dead

If there ever was a show that could make you feel better about your life situation, it is The Walking Dead. Some people think it's cute to recommend a plate of juicy ribs for a Walking Dead binge. If you’re totally unaffected by gratuitous scenes of rotten flesh, intestines, blood and skull-stabbings, go right ahead. The rest of us can emulate the neo-agrarian society in the Hilltop colony with farm-fresh, seasonal produce, then indulge in a plate of cookies. (If that menu seems strange, it will make sense by season five.)

  • Date: Full marathon runs on AMC start Friday Dec. 30 at 10 p.m.
  • Streaming on: Seasons one through five are available on Netflix
  • Beverage: A Bloody Mary made with Zombie Apocalypse Vodka. Yes, it’s a thing!
  • Meal: For the Hilltop Colony route, go with the raw food Tigerbowl from Green Seed Vegan—spiralized zucchini, yam, kelp noodles and shoots with almond dressing. For the carnivores, red wine braised short ribs with jalapeño-cheese grits, roasted carrots and pearl onions from Frank’s Americana Revival. A batch of chocolate chip cookies from Michael’s Cookie Jar is the perfect ode to season five’s “Cookie Carol.”
  • Delivery Service: Favor for all courses

The crown f17hyx

A steaming pot of Darjeeling tea is in order.

Recommendation: The Crown

Princess Elizabeth just wants to be an ordinary girl. Tough luck. The Crown is full of moody lighting, crisply tailored costumes and all of the reasons we’re glad to be out of a stodgy monarchy. On the flip side, we’re happy to keep the hearty pub food and dark ale.

  • Streaming on: Netflix
  • Beverage: Boddington’s Pub Ale served lukewarm, followed by a steaming pot of Darjeeling tea
  • Meal: Beef Wellington from Queen Vic Pub
  • Delivery Service: UberEats
Deutschland83 wrsw7w

Recommendation: Deutschland 83

An edgy, gripping European import, Deutschland 83 is a 1980s coming-of-age story about a young, naive border guard in East Germany being pulled into spying on the West for the Stasi. Nothing says German-East-meets-German-West like a sauerkraut-topped beef frank with spicy mustard in a pretzel bun.

  • Streaming on: Hulu
  • Beverage: Live Oak Hefeweizen
  • Meal: Barren Van Ratchitt sauerkraut hot dog from Happy Fatz
  • Delivery Service: UberEats

Apparently, they drink Oolong tea in K'un-L'un, too.

Recommendation: Marvel’s Iron Fist

Iron Fist is the newest arrival to the Marvel Netflix party that includes "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage" and "Daredevil." We can expect a lot of kung-fu fighting in hallways and on dark rooftops, but unlike the other Marvel series on Netflix, we will also travel to the mystical kingdom of K'un-L'un. As for what to pack for the journey, sometimes it's best not to think too far outside of the Chinese takeout box; it’s an iconic staple in comic book dining. Fancy up the drinks, though. After all, superhero Danny Rand is a billionaire Manhattanite.

  • Date: Netflix starting March 2017
  • Streaming: Get prepared by watching the other Marvel series available now on Netflix.
  • Beverage: Aged sherry with an orange twist, followed by a cup of golden Oolong tea
  • Meal: Three Pepper Beaten Duck from Mala Sichuan Bistro: tea-smoked duck stir-fried with Serrano pepper, Szechuan peppercorn and red chile pods, combined with the garlicky bok choy
  • Delivery Service: UberEats
