Edison & Patton's “Rompope"

Few drinks are more synonymous with the holiday season than eggnog. Ever wondered what eggnog really is and why it’s so popular during Christmas time? According to Mental Floss, eggnog can be traced back to the 14th century when Englishmen drank hot cocktails known as “posset.” While posset did not have eggs, the variety of eggnog we have all come to know and love (or hate to love as some people do) typically consists of the following ingredients: milk, cream, sugar, alcohol (usually rum, brandy, vodka, cognac or whiskey), whipped eggs and spices.

With so many different alcohols options for eggnog, some of our local bars are offering up their own versions of this yuletide drink. Here are our picks to get your eggnog fix.

Edison & Patton

This Heights charmer (formerly just Edison) is offering up their modern take on the traditional drink with “Rompope,” described as very smooth Mexican based eggnog with rum, garnished with orange rind, coconut and cinnamon.

FM Kitchen and Bar

Chef Ryan Hildebrand's low-key bar and kitchen on Shepherd is known for its ample patio space, "comfort food" and cocktail program. While you won't see eggnog on the menu regularly, FM is serving up their take on the classic throughout the rest of the holiday season.

State of Grace

A must-stop on any Houston foodie's Christmas list, the bar at SOG (as it is affectionately called) puts their spin on the classic by making their "Southern Snow” version with chai, vanilla, cream, espresso infused rum and Fernet-Branca.

"The Negranza Nog" is heavily influenced by Alex Negranza's love for Becherovka, with clove and cinnamon masking underlying sweeter citrus notes. So what's in it? Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac, Pampero Anniversario Venezuelan Rum, Lustau Palo Cortado Sherry, Becherovka, whole eggs and cream. It’s only on the menu until the 30th, so get it while you can.

Weights + Measures' "Maids a Milking"

Weights + Measures

Having a little fun with the name, the W+M team has "Maids a Milking" on the menu, offering up a tasty bourbon version of nog with whole eggs, milk, cream, cinnamon and nutmeg. We suggest ordering it with some tasty treats from the bakeshop.

And for those who looking for more eggnog options, there is also the Nogsmas 2017 eggnog crawl in the Heights going on right now. Participating in the crawl are Johnny’s Gold Brick, Eight Row Flint, Lei Low Bar, D&T Drive Inn, Coltivare and Down House. How does Nogsmas work? Stop by each location, get a glass of each bars take on the classic and get your eggnog card punched. If you try all 7 cocktails by December 28, you can head on over to Johnny’s Gold Brick for the finale event on the 28th to get a special prize.
