Flying Fish is now open. Located at 18th and Durham, the small chain from the folks behind Rodeo Goat and Flying Saucer Draught Emporium promises seafood the Southern way: catfish (all-you-can-eat catfish on Wednesdays), shrimp, oysters ($0.75 oysters on Sundays), crab legs, and crawfish.
But let's not bury the lede. Flying Fish, per a release, also promises this: "Flying Fish is home to the 'Billy Bass Adoption Wall', promising to house, shelter, love and protect each adopted Billy Bass. Bring in your 'Take Me to the River' crooner and receive a free basket of catfish and get your name on the wall next to the beloved Billy Bass." Now that's innovation.
Specialties like po'boys, jambalya, grits, gumbo, hushpuppies, and fried green tomatoes are also on offer. And the beverage program includes beer, wine, and margaritas. The Flying Fish is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily at 1815 N. Durham Drive.
Meanwhile, we Houstonia staffers have a spring in our step, for signage has been installed at La Vibra Tacos, set to open at 5th and Yale. The concept, specializing in tacos and sides popular in Mexico City, will soft open soon, per a representative.
Perry's Steakhouse & Grille's seventh Houston-area location (and first inside the Loop) is scheduled to open in February, per a representative. The 12,000-square-foot restaurant will be at 1997 West Gray St. in River Oaks.
Who of Houston's best female bartenders has what it takes to contend for national glory? All-female bartending competition Speed Rack is coming back to Houston (at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Houston Event Venue), pitting more than 20 of the best drink slingers in the region against one another. The top eight head to nationals, which are scheduled for May in Chicago. Tickets are $25 in advance.
Feel like you didn't get enough sparking wine this New Year's Eve? Third Coast is hosting a bubbles tasting event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15. In this event curated by Third Coast sommelier David Cook, four sparkling wines will be featured and paired with bites from the restaurant's executive chef Jon Buchanan. Tickets are $55.
TRIS chef Austin Simmons has a dining series called "CollaborEIGHT," in which he puts together an eight-course dinner with an accomplished fellow chef. The next installment of the series is from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 14 and features John Tesar, three-time James Beard nominee and Top Chef seasons 10 and 14 contestant from Dallas. The dinner is $175.
Peli Peli Kitchen—the South African fast casual concept from the folks at Peli Peli at the Galleria—is finally putting actual peri peri chicken on the menu (before they were just infusing a peri peri flavor into rotisserie chicken). It launched the menu item Friday with a pop-up at Kirby Ice House, with additional pop-ups scheduled for the ice house every Friday in January. Come between 5 and 9 p.m. to get your authentic peri peri chicken.
And farm-fresh burger concept B.GOOD has new winter menu items coming Wednesday, including a mocha protein smoothie and citrus and avocado salad. A seasonal burger, sandwich, and soup are also set to be rolled out in February. Get those menu items at the region's only B.GOOD location in Spring.
