Heart rate monitors and TV screens displaying your progress are just two ways Orangetheory has incorporated technology into its workouts.

Whether it's Soulcycle or crossfit, more Americans are spending money on boutique fitness studios than ever before. In fact, it's the only growth segment of the otherwise stagnant gym industry. Between 2012 and 2015, attendance at these specialty studios grew by 70 percent, with these smaller, more focused mini-gyms now making up 35 percent of the $25.8 billion fitness market.

Florida-based Orangetheory is just one of those success stories, opening a dozen locations in Houston since entering the market in 2014. This Friday, October 27, local franchise owner Jim Potesta will open his 13th—this one in The Woodlands. It takes over Texsun Pools and Spas space next door to CVS in the Cochran’s Crossing shopping center at 4747 Research Forest Dr.

The suburbs have been fruitful for Orangetheory; it opened its first five locations outside the Loop, starting out with spots in Pearland, Sugar Land, Tanglewood, Town & Country Village and Vintage Park before finally moving inside the Loop with its sixth location in West University, which opened in 2015. Since then, the chain has expanded to cover nearly every major Houston exurb, counting Cinco Ranch, Cypress, Kingwood, Spring and Webster in addition to another Inner Loop location in the First Ward.

The newest Orangtheory location opens in The Woodlands this Friday, October 27.

"We are thrilled to bring the first Orangetheory Fitness studio to The Woodlands," said Potesta. "Orangetheory Fitness has spread throughout Houston and helped thousands of Houstonians get into better shape, lose weight and increase energy levels. We’re thrilled to bring this unique workout to The Woodlands community."

Houston has become a massive market for the chain, with Orangetheory Fitness CEO David Long telling fitness pub Club Industry last year he "foresees a footprint of 30 to 40 locations in Houston." That sort of growth may seem overly ambitious, but Orangetheory celebrated the opening of its 200th location last summer. And as of today, the chain now counts more than 730 studios in 45 states and 16 countries.

The new studio in The Woodlands accommodates 34 people per class in its 3,900-square-foot space. Each 60-minute class consists of a high-intensity interval training workout using water rowing machines, treadmills and a strength floor with free weights, TRX straps and abdominal equipment. Classes are offered seven days a week, with both drop-in prices and membership plans available. For more information about The Woodlands studio, head to orangetheoryhouston.com or call 832-916-2115.
